Hi - I've set up this blog to provide a home for music-related album reviews and articles. I have a fairly broad taste in music, but everything I write here will be informed by my passionate belief that rock'n'roll music is the greatest thing ever !
Some key points about the way I think so that you can understand my prejudices :-
- The most magical moment in music history was that day in 1954 when Elvis and Sam Phillips cut "That's Alright Mama" in Sun Studios, merging blues singing and a country beat to create rock'n'roll.
- I am a populist; I believe the function of art is to move people. I evaluate all art by its depth and its accessibility. I despise cultural elitism and am suspicious of the avant-garde.
- Music has to have an edge to it - anything too comfortable is boring !
- I like things that are enduring, have great playing and/or strong rhythmic interplay - or great lyrics. Tunes are not enough.
- I love 50s rock'n'roll, pretty much all 60s/70s rock music, blues, psychedelia, garage, and punk / new wave.
- I hate Abba - their lionisation now just shows how we've lost our aesthetic marbles.
- Andrew Lloyd-Webber and Simon Cowell make me physically ill.
- I'm a prog fan - the biggest myth in rock journalism is that punk blew away prog. Punk and prog have much in common !
- I will not hear a word said against The Rolling Stones, The Grateful Dead, The Byrds, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Bob Dylan, Elvis Presley, Bevis Frond, Robyn Hitchcock, Ray Davies, The Who, Quicksilver Messenger Service, Moby Grape, Drive-By-Truckers, Graham Nash, Steve Stills, Neil Young, David Crosby, Van Morrison, John Lennon, The Doors, Frank Zappa, Little Feat, Egg, Soft Machine, The Velvet Undeground, Joy Division, Echo & The Bunnymen, The Pistols, The Clash, Nick Lowe, Gram Parsons, Led Zeppelin, Cream, Jimi Hendrix, Focus, Wishbone Ash, Family and loads of others.
- My Desert Island Disk would probably be "Exile On Main Street". Every single moment on that album has something to offer. "Blonde On Blonde" is a close second, along with "Green River", "The White Album", "Astral Weeks", "The Gilded Palace Of Sin", "Soft Machine Third", "Europe '72", "Led Zeppelin 4" and loads of others.
